Water molecules have a secret preference: they love red light. The chemical bonds in water vibrate at just the right frequency to absorb red photons, turning their energy into tiny amounts of heat. As a result, red light is completely filtered out in the first few meters.

Blue light, however, doesn't match these molecular vibrations. It slips right past, traveling hundreds of meters deep. Eventually, these blue photons bounce off water molecules, scattering in all directions—and some of that scattered blue light bounces right back up to your eyes.
