What is a Habitat?

Think about your own home. It is much more than just a pile of wood and bricks. It is your safe zone. Inside, you have shelter from the rain, a kitchen stocked with food, and pipes that deliver fresh water. It has everything you need to survive and feel comfortable.

Just like you, every single animal, plant, and tiny microbe on Earth has its own natural home. We call this a habitat. A habitat is the specific natural environment where an organism lives, finds its food, drinks its water, and raises its family.

Because every creature is unique, habitats are not one-size-fits-all. A fish needs the wet, oxygen-rich water of a lake, while a cactus thrives in the dry, sun-baked soil of a desert. A habitat must perfectly match the physical needs of the living thing that calls it home.
